Christy Report post Posted November 19, 2010 I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about the sport but I ran across some statistics that were kinda surprising: A statistical survey found that 20% of all rugby injuries result in concussions. A British study showed that of the 443 spinal injuries reported between 1985 and 1995, 18% of them occurred through rugby. Of these 79 cases, 70% have resulted in serious paralysis. Another statistic compiled from spinal injury units around the country showed that players under the age of 26 sustained 50% of all serious rugby injuries. Again, most of the reported injuries were at school and club level, and not at regional, provincial or national levels. http://www.allsands.com/Misc3/rugbyinjurysta_udd_gn.htm Also found that headgear and what not doesn't really protect you from getting concussions while playing: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/206740.php That being said, is it worth playing considering all the serious injury risks? I know this comes with all sports but of course rugby is a lot different from say American football with tons of padding and what not. Does anyone here play rugby? Andrew Report post Posted November 19, 2010 I played for about a year for a local team when I was younger(think it was like u15s or 14s) and you get bashed about but I never had any serious injuries. But I guess if I'd played like u17s or 18s then I would probably have got hurt more.
 0
Le Bennett Report post Posted November 19, 2010 Use to play it a few years ago, I watch it all the time. As a few old blokes down the pub I go to say "it's a real man's sport."
 0

4kyiyw4k Report post Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) American football is rugby for pussies, but yeah I don't play rugby it's too brutal lol. american football is a much more evolved sport than rugby; uniform and rules looked similar to rugby in early years; it's just an exponentially more popular sport than rugby so teams/investors would rather protect their assets with overdecked armor; unfortunately sometimes this is counterproductive Edited November 19, 2010 by Delinius
 0
