Jake2 Report post Posted December 29, 2010 I have an old, outdated Motorola Surfboard SB4100 38Mbps that I currently use for my internet, and a 54Mbps Lynksis wireless router that I use as well; if I were to buy a modem that could output 160Mbps, would that be a complete waste? (I'm worried because of the wireless router's 54Mbps cap) Also, do newer modems have more than 1 output Ethernet slot?
 0

4kyiyw4k Report post Posted December 29, 2010 (edited) 160mbps output cap for local home network internet speed capped by the rate your provider gives, may or may not reach maximum rated speed for router (Location:Pennsylvania guessing no or your rates are ridiculously high, move to seoul its cheaper there) recent (~2007) usually have 2 or more ethernet slots Edited December 29, 2010 by Delinius
 0
Jake2 Report post Posted December 29, 2010 160mbps output cap for local home network internet speed capped by the rate your provider gives, may or may not reach maximum rated speed for router (Location:Pennsylvania guessing no or your rates are ridiculously high, move to seoul its cheaper there) recent (~2007) usually have 2 or more ethernet slots My main concern is if the router wouldn't be able to use all 160Mbps capable of the modem itself. Would it truncate all Mbps after the 54Mbps or no?
 0

Numbers` Report post Posted December 30, 2010 Your fine, doubt you'll have anything higher than 15mbs coming from the modem anyways. But id honestly upgrade both.
 0

Splodge Report post Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) Just get a 150MBps Linksys/cisco router. Nowadays they're 4/5 units in one, including a built in modem + router + wireless + DHCP/webhosting services. Don't really think you'll hit anywhere near 30MBps on a US line (I could be wrong), however It's always nice to be future proof. Yes they will have more then 2 ethernet outputs. Usually 3-4 minimal these days. About being worried about your modem : Purchase the new router, it has a built in modem in itself, and just use it as your main hub instead of having a modem + router. Well, unless It's a coaxial cable that plugs into your modem to give an ethernet output, then you'll have to use both the modem + the hub.
