Anti-Virus

Recently I had to re-format my computer and I need to get an anti-virus. I have used AVG in the past and it really slows the fuck out of your computer for several hours. What do you suggest?

Most Antiviruses are nearly the same for the most part and will do their basic jobs. I wouldn't recommend paying for an Antivirus (if you really want a paid one, just get a cracked version). Go with a light weight Antivirus that will do its job.

Been using Avira ever since I build this computer (January) and I'm satisfied. It's completely free aswell. Other than that, Microsoft Security Essentials is slowly taking over.

I'd recommend Avast free edition. It's ranked in the top three by almost all statistics and it's memory usage is even less than Eset Nod32. It has many scanners, and I haven't had one problem with it since I've gotten it. Kaspersky is a resource hog, Avira finds too many false positives and AVG has a shitty detection rate. Do not waste your time getting cracked paid versions because Avast free edition is more than enough for your computer. Do not interfere two anti-viruses at once because you'll only further your problems. My overall setup for an average computer that will last you years is the following:

Anti-virus - Avast. (It's all you need as a real time scanner).

On Demand Scanner - Malwarebytes (Used to find anything your anti-virus doesn't).

Basic maintenance - Ccleaner. (Clean out your temporary files and free your system of clutter. It's registry cleaner is also very light weight and not too in depth to be dangerous so it helps clean that up as well. I'd stay away from all other registry cleaners besides Ccleaner's.

I recommend running the Avast and Malwarebyte's scanners once a week. Ccleaner 2-3 times a week depending on your personal preference. I'd also defrag your hard drive once a month. You can do all of these scans while you sleep and awake to it's findings, that's what I normally do.

For third party programs, I would just ignore the hype. Use windows defrag to defrag your hard drive and leave the Window's disk cleaner to clean your disk. Anything more is just a waste of time and really isn't doing much for your PC like you think it is.

I hope this helped!
